5G technology is a wireless network that transmits data packs at a higher speed and lower latency than its 1G, 2G, 3G, and 4G counterparts. Gone are the days when a webpage loads for 1 – 2 minutes, today a page can load in less than a second with a good internet connection, delivering a quality browsing experience, fast download, and uninterrupted video streaming and zoom meeting.
The 5G network does not only deliver a complete pack of the best browsing quality but also supports global and economic growth by creating employment opportunities and improvement in social services such as education, transportation, and health care, achieving an estimated value of $13.1 trillion of global economic output as prognosticated by experts.
Therefore, the Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC), in collaboration with MTN Nigeria, has taken the initiative to launch the 5G technology this month, August 2022, in an effort to widen the digital stream across Nigeria.
Although, before now, many solicitous personalities have expressed concerns about the negative effects the 5G technology may have.
In 2020, the World Health Organisation (WHO) and International Telecommunication Union (ITU) unequivocally stated that the 5G technology does not initiate any adverse health conditions nor result in complications.
While this may be resolved, the United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has shown that 5G bandwidth poses a serious risk to airplanes, thus a threat to safety. This has propelled the relevant authority to pass instructions to 5G firms to mitigate the threat by switching off some 5G mast a few miles away from landing.
At the same time, deliberations are being made to find a permanent solution, to ensure that the signal interactions do not threaten safety in the aviation industry.
The interaction of the 5G network is a welcome development and an indication of progress in Nigeria’s digital and communication system.
